Ski Weekend

This weekend we escaped the wintry pea-soup fog which had settled on the River Saone. We packed up the car and drove through Switzerland, around the stunning northern shores of Lake Geneva and up the winding mountain road to the blue skies and sunshine in the ski resort of Chatel.
The High Alps have not had good snow this season, but thankfully Chatel has invested millions in snow-making equipment and the resort was in good shape.
We had a great weekend and packed in many miles of skiing.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year from the water rats in France. We have had a fun-filled holiday and notched up plenty of ski miles on the snowy slopes of the Jura mountains.
We have honoured the French tradition of the Galette des Rois : a marzipan pastry tart (with a hidden trinket) which is eaten at Epiphany. The youngest member of the family is sent under the table with the tart and then distributes it from there to all assembled. Callum thought this was great fun. The person lucky enough to find the trinket in their slice (Shiv) becomes the King, wears a crown and chooses someone to be their Queen (Andy)! Unfortunately the trinket - a religious figurine, fell into the drain when we were washing up and is now the patron saint of fairy liquid.
The boys returned to school on Monday the 3rd but soon realised that with Wednesday off every week they could go skiing all day. Indeed we had our best day yet. Peaceful slopes, a good deal on ski passes, great weather and a slightly braver Shiv. I watch my sons hurtle past and disappear over the ridge, their father in hot pursuit and wonder if I will ever ski in company again. But at least it is quiet!
